28 Years Later

It really feels like they ran out of things to say with this franchise 28 years ago. The first film's strong themes, visuals, and horror elements are almost completely missing here. The story is especially terrible, with an abrupt ending with little to no closure or satisfaction after a long, bland journey. The film was also just not scary in the slightest. Half of the "scary" moments are shown in the trailers and the rest are simply dull. They tried to introduce new wrinkles to the "zombies" to make them scarier, but it didn't help and wasn't necessary. This series isn't exactly known for being extremely horrifying, but the other parts of the film are bland as well. The characters are pretty one-dimensional, boring, and predictable. The visuals can be interesting sometimes, especially in the first half of the film with some visions (or whatever you want to call them) and action-movie camerawork, but for some reason this almost completely dissapears by the end. I'm not even sure what the theme of the film is supposed to be, "momento mori"? And even if they did stick strongly to this theme, the actions of the characters and the events of the story don't exactly fit well with that. I also want to briefly mention the absurd final scene, something that literally made me and the other patrons of the theater laugh quite a bit. I'm sure the strangeness and humor was intentional, but it feels like a post-credit scene that somehow made the final cut, and causes the film to end on a sour note. 28 Years Later is certainly entertaining, but the opposite of memorable.
