A Touch of Zen
King Hu

This movie is hard to describe. It's around 3 hours long, with some great action sequences and plot devices to drive the thrilling story along. But it also takes almost an hour to get to those setpieces, and the majority of that non-action time is spent focusing on characters that aren't all that interesting. Usually, an action film makes one of the action heroes their protagonist, but not here. The choice of perspective is very interesting, and makes for some great moments/shots, however I'm not sure exactly what it adds to the experience. The action itself is really, really good. There are some moments in this movie that are some of my favorite scenes or shots in a martial arts film ever. The characters can be interesting as well, but its really the visuals that stand out. The depictions of nature alongside the violence of the film stand out as a major theme. Also, its cool to see a major female action hero in a film this old, especially one as cool as Miss Yang. A really solid movie, especially for martial art movie nerds like myself.
