Close-up
Abbas Kiarostami
Directed by:
1990

This is perhaps the most unique film I have ever had the chance to see. One could call it a documentary but it does so much more than a documentary ever could. Instead of interviewing those involved about past events, the filmmaker was able to get the real people to reenact events that really happened to them. It really is a beautiful film, wonderfully shot and directed, even within the limited confines of a courtroom. There is a lot I want to know about the directing process for a film such as this, as I'm sure it was very difficult to pull off. Even when the execution doesn't go as planned, it reveals a lot about the filmmaking process and about life itself. The story is also interesting on its own, such a unique tale that can only come from real life. I wish there was more films like this one, but perhaps its rarity is what makes Close-up so good.
