Hateful Eight
Quentin Tarantino

Despite my best efforts, I very much enjoy pretty much all of Tarantino's work. However, I can comfortably say that this is one of his less enjoyable films. Don't get me wrong, it's still good, and for good reasons. It's visually great in all aspects. The snowy, desolate landscapes look just as good as the rugged, warm interior of the cabin. The acting is top notch, with Jackson giving out one of his best performances alongside the rest of the well-acted characters. The main thing that really drags the score of this movie down is the *other* characters, or at least the ones that we don't meet in the first ten minutes. These four characters are different in their own right, and I understand why the audience doesn't get to know them as well. However, I think the lack of their development makes the long scenes in the cabin lack a lot of thrill and substance. It seems that the drama that should come with being trapped in a dark cabin with a bunch of strangers doesn't come fast enough and leaves too quickly. This had the potential to be an all-time murder mystery, or at least a very good western set in an interesting location. Instead, it's just another good Tarantino movie. Certainly not bad, but not as good as it could have been. Still an enjoyable movie from start to finish, and one that is even better to watch the second time (for the most part).
