Holy crap. I usually make a point out of not going to see these soulless Disney live-action remakes, but I made an exception here. The reason behind this betrayal of my moral code was because of a particular spoiler that I heard. I simply couldn't believe that it could be true, so I had to see for myself. However, it was real. To avoid spoilers in this review, let me just say that they made a MAJOR plot change at the very end of the film which directly contradicts half of the entire movie up until that point. I just can't believe that they thought this was a better choice than the original story. It's shameful and offensive to the themes and messaging of the original film and to the people of Hawai'i. Even ignoring this obviously deliberate coporate bleaching, the movie is just not that good. The film doesn't feel at all like the original, with the crappy visuals making everything look like its taking place in a water park. The humor is definitely worse than the first, mostly thanks to the downgraded visual comedy. The writing is mostly ok, and the acting is perfectly acceptable for this kind of movie. Another major gripe I have with this film is the characters. The main characters are still great but a couple of the side characters, namely Agent Bubbles and Jumba, are stripped of a lot of their personality and depth. Bubbles barely does anything in the film, Jumba's character is entirely different by the end, and both are just totally unlikeable compared to their animated counterparts. To make up for the void left by changing these characters, they introduce a few more useless side characters that serve no unique purpose and even remove another. The only real reason behind this is probably so they could get Tia Carrere into the film, but it just makes the story feel more watered down. Anyway, long story short this is a piece of actual garbage that no parent should take their kid to see.
