Meet Me in St. Louis

I, being from St. Louis, have of course heard of this movie before. Many times in fact, however never once have I heard anything about the film, just that it was, well, a film. But after watching this colorful, musically rich, historical period piece with a cast containing some well-known actors, I can say that this movie is not good. The music or colors or anything I previously mentioned weren't the bad parts of the film, but they weren't exactly the good parts either. At least, they aren't good enough to make up for the actual bad parts of the film; the story and the characters. The latter of those two is the better of the two, although the characters certainly aren't as colorful as the scenery. There's just not a lot to them, and while only a handful are really focused on, it seems like they just play their part in the story without actually influencing anything to an interesting degree. The exception to this would be Judy Garland's character, the only one with some degree of agency in the film, but her character is honestly too one-dimensional to be interesting enough. I'm sure most female characters from this time period fill this trope, but even in a movie with so many female characters, it seems everything she does is towards wooing some man. The story is just as bland, being as much an ad for St. Louis and early 20th century America as it is an actual plot. The only really enjoyable part of this movie, for me, was the character Tootie, who is actually hilarious in a meta humor kind of way. She seems almost like a Shakespearean character here, but even she cannot lift this movie out of the dumps.
