Midsommar
Ari Aster

As someone who loved Hereditary and has heard great things about Midsommar, I was excited for this other highly-touted Aster horror film. And this certainly is one of those, with Aster's signature cinematographic style popping up everywhere. I love his style of horror, where the most frightening things are just out of the corner of your eye, only occasionally making themselves seen to you. This is a technique that other horror directors really need to catch up on. However, this movie is not that amazing. The visuals and story are pretty good, this whole movie is set in a beautiful landscape and the unique visuals are appealing. However, I think this movie tries to make itself into something more than just a scary movie, and fails. There are plenty of themes here; control, family, trauma to name a few. But none of these themes are actually explored in a way that creates some kind of revelation for the characters or the audience. I kind of liked the ending, but I was expected something crazier, scarier, or just deeper. And Midsommar was just a moderate amount of all of those things. Still a cool movie to watch, especially if you like modern horror.
