I've seen at least a dozen films that follow the "dangerous dude tries to get revenge and ends up killing a small army" trope to a tee, and Monkey Man is another one to add to that growing list. However I think this film does a decent job of differentiating itself from those of its ilk thanks to its strong cultural and social commentary. While the tropes and genres are very broad and familiar, the setting and themes are certainly not common in action films. This unique style and flavor adds to the strong action and visual flare that goes along with the decent revenge plot. I honestly thought the film could use a lot more action but I might just be getting greedy. The fights that do exist are very well shot and choreographed however. Overall this is a pretty good film that I will probably be revisiting in the future.
