Primetime

Probably my most hyped movie of the year (besides Dune), and man, Primetime did not dissapoint. This is a gripping thriller from start to finish with amazing visuals, great acting, and a solid story/themes to boot.

Let's go from top to bottom. I was actually lying when I said the visuals were amazing. They were spectacular. So many shots were so well-done that they were instantly lasered into my brain forever. The colors, the lighting, everything was great. I really need to know what exactly they did in post to make it look like that. It's just such a good visual style that I want every photo I take from now on to look like it's from this movie. As long as it doesn't look like I'm actually in the movie.

Next, the acting and writing. Pattinson once again blows my socks off at how good of an actor he is. I really wonder what is going to happen to his career from this point forward. Is it even possible to keep up this level of quality in your films for a long period? It feels like he's been putting up stellar performances every single year for almost a decade. Primetime is probably one of Robert's best, and he's helped by a great cast that really fills out the rest of the film. There is no bad acting here, only acting that wasn't done by Pattinson. The writing is very well done in this respect as well, giving each of the main 3 their fair share of the spotlight while making them feel unique and real.

Finally, let's talk about the story. I was maybe a little dissapointed in it, but that's not to say I didn't enjoy it. I think the first two thirds are just excellent in every way. The movie is tense when it needs to be but also loosens up at good moments, it's funny and scary, it's slow and fast. It's just very well paced and written in many different aspects that there's not much to complain about. When we get to the last act, things unravel just a little bit. It's obvious they meant the final act to be more contemplative on the audience's part, which I appreciate, but it also meant that the excellent pacing that adorned the beginning of the film is kind of left to the wayside. The things that replace the pacing are mostly more abstract visuals and theming, which is still pretty good. I wouldn't say it makes the audience think too much, which is unfortunate, but it still has a lot to say and does a very good job of doing so within the medium of film. The ending itself is well-done too.

Definitely one of the more interesting biopics I've ever seen, if not the best. This is a film that will be copied by others quite a bit.
