Ran

From start to finish, this film is a feast for the senses. The incredible landscapes, structures, armies, and skies of Ran are majestic. The majesty does not end at the visuals, as the story is also incredible to witness. The evolution of the character of Hidetora, his sons, and his empire is captivating. Even though the characters mostly function as charicatures instead of real people, they serve their purpose well, as the audience in never meant to focus on their individual traits as much as the interaction they have between one another. There are so many shots and scenes which I could talk about, but frankly so many of them are amazing and must be witnessed first hand. From the introductory song (which is crazy good from a thematic standpoint) to the end, the themes and messaging of the movie elevate Ran to the next level. This is a masterpiece through and through, and definitely the magnum opus of one of the greatest directors of all time.
