Rebel Without a Cause

I've certainly heard of this movie before, but I have had no notion of what to expect going in. It definitely separates itself from other movies of the time period, especially in terms of its themes, narrative, and characters, but its just not all that great. In terms of the good stuff, the motifs that this film explores are interesting and well written into the story. The constant idea of manhood, fatherlessness, and masculinity permeated every aspect of the film and were the most interesting part of the movie for me. There were many scenes with well thought camera angles, costumes, and writing to accentuate this idea. Otherwise, the film is a little dull. There is not a large amount of engaging action or drama to keep anyone entertained, and while some of the passive dialouge can be nice, most of the time the writing is so off-putting that I swear half of the audio was dubbed over (which, in hindsight, it probably was). Nevertheless, it doesn't bode well for your film if normal conversation between your main characters sounds like a computer wrote it. This is a telling historical account of the feelings and motifs of a post cold-war america, but besides the interesting themes explored in the film (including sexuality?), there is not much to see here.
