Sentimental Value
Joachim Trier

This is one of the easiest 4+ star ratings I have ever seen. Sentimental Value is a superbly crafted drama with everything you would expect from a top-notch Norwegian flick. The incredible writing and acting create such an engaging, somber, nostalgic yet hopeful film that will not leave your head for literal weeks afterwards. I cannot tell if its my own experiences that make me connect with this film so much, or just the fact that this film is so masterfully crafted as to invite anyone into the minds and emotions of the characters. SkarsgÄrd and Reinsve give such mind-blowing performances that its hard to imagine them acting in any other work, and that's not to overshadow the acting from the rest of the cast as well. The slow, melancholy beginning slowly but surely erodes into a masterwork of emotional beats, always finding a way to further develop the characters in meaningful ways up until the final scene. And the world around them keeps shifting in subtle ways as well, further clueing the audience into their minds and hearts. I do dislike the Scandanavian's disdain for color but a drab palette is sometimes needed, and this film is exactly that, with wonderful visuals that never distract the audience from that actual story. The only reason I haven't scored this film a little higher is because I'm honestly in disbelief of how much I enjoyed it the first time. For what it is, this film is as perfect as anyone could hope for.
