Spirited Away
Hayao Miyazaki

2001

This is difficult for me to say, but I don't think this movie deserves a perfect score. Don't get me wrong, I adore this film. I have seen it many times, and every time I am amazed at the wonderful world that is crafted through the breathtaking visuals and excellent soundtrack. The vast array of colorful characters and settings make this world feel fresh and interesting even at the very end. Chihiro is a great main character, and while not as interesting as the world around her, this is not an issue. It is a joy to watch her navigate and adapt to this foreign environment, and there isn't a single ingenuine character moment throughout the entire movie. The main thing that drags this movie from perfect status, for me, is the storyline. It is no surprise that Studio Ghibli movies never really focus on a concise and well-paced story, and I think Spirited Away suffers from this to a degree. The story loses a lot of its quality during the third act for me, although it still ends with a satisfying conclusion. It's exiciting, memorable, adventerous, and so much more. And thanks to the array of memorable scenes in a variety of environments, extremely rewatchable. This is an emotional masterpiece of a film.
