The Ascent
Larisa Shepitko

This was a mesmerizing film that took a lot of unexpected turns and twists. It starts off in an interesting sequence that perfectly envelops the tone, and once the film actually narrows in on its protagonists, it morphs into a rich drama with a lot of character nuance and though provoking decisions. I loved the dichotomy between the two main characters, and how their decisions impacted one another and the world around them. Their relationship, both literally and in the metaphorical sense, provides a lot of interesting dicussion into what it means to be a solider, or just human. I loved the visual representation of the snow-draped landscape and the imposing shots that the director plans out with it. The story may be a little simple but that is a benefit to this tightly packed war film.
