The Babadook
Jennifer Kent
Directed by:
2014

I would say that this is just a half-decent B movie, but The Babadook actually has some of the best executed theming that I've seen in a horror film. The story, characters, and scares all center around the strong messaging around mental health and motherhood. The story is quite good for the genre from beginning to end, and the subversion continues with the interesting (yet still on theme!) ending. The visuals are striking for being so simple, even if nothing is particularly scary as a result. But the lack of raw horror is made up for by the mountain of emotion coming from the drama, and also from the incredible acting. Definitely a gem in a sea of horror films.
