The Devil Wears Prada 2

I don't really have that many negative thoughts about this film, but not many positive thoughts either. I expected this film to be exactly the same as the last in plot, characters, and tone, but it suprised me by only being half of that. The story is pretty similar for the first half, and while it does diverge into some interesting territory the general feel of the film is still dangerously close to the original. The small token changes, like new faces in the office or slightly different levels of political correctness, are shoved in your face as if to say "Look! It's not 2006 anymore!" But unfortunately, the things that changed the most changed for the worst. The visuals are drab and completely boring, even including the insane amount of beautiful outfits that the cinematography takes a painstakingly long time to show in every shot. The characters are more boring, mostly because of their lack of growth, and the fact that the new ones are entirely unimportant most of the time.

We still have our cast of characters, and none of them have changed all that much since the previous film (except maybe Miranda). That's 20 years of character progression that could have taken place, but for the most part the world has stood completely still. Even the movie itself, where characters are supposed to grow and evolve, doesn't see very much of that, especially for Andy. In fact, I'd argue that Andy regressed as a character in Devil Wears Prada 2. In the beginning we see her at the top of her game literally, but by the end it seems like she has sacrificed her morals to go back on the lessons she learned in a previous film! This ties into the general themes of the film, which I actually thought were interesting in premise. The idea of journalism being under attack is very real and pertinent, and I had a glimmer of hope for where they would take that in the story. However the film offers no resolution, no vision for the future. It's very bleak, literally kicking the can down the road instead of finding a solution to the problem it presents. I would be totally okay with the bleakness, as this would be even more pertinent, but the film presents this as if it's a good ending!

I'm being harsh as always, but I had fun watching this film for the most part. Definitely go see it if you liked the last one. I still love Anne Hathaway even if her botox is preventing her from acting. One last callout before I go though: it's absolutely crazy that they still managed to sideline every single minority they could think of. None of them are important to the story really. Crazy.
