The Drama

I really liked this film, and I can't remember the last time I was this excited to see something in theaters. Maybe since Dune. However this excitement was for entirely different reasons. No spoilers, but there's many conversations being had about the film. I think this is its greatest success, getting people to engage with the themes and plot. My main complaint is that these themes are not all that. Not that they're not deep or relevant, which they are, it's that the movie doesn't actually explore them to the extent I wanted. Bringing up an interesting and culturally relevant topic is cool, but doesn't really improve a film unless you actually have something to say about it. I'm being a bit harsh, The Drama does a pretty good job of making the audience question their beliefs during the film. There's plenty else to love about it too; it's acted to an incredible degree, the actual drama is so hard to watch I had my hand on my face for at least 20 straight minutes (a compliment), and the visuals really suprised me with their simplicity and elegance. The story is good too, but definitely suffers from the writer trying to fit way too much shock porn into the runtime. But that's what people are going to see, so I guess they did a good job. Not sure of how much cultural relevance this will have in 5 years, but I see a world in which this is a cult classic.
