This is my new favorite film about poverty, especially American poverty. The visuals, characters, and story all contribute to this theme, and the location (right outside of Disney World) is the perfect setting for this depiction. The story itself is fine, but more of a mishmash of different stories going on throughout the summer. The perspective, that of the children living in these motels, is amazing, and fun to watch from an audience perspective. The child actors are pretty good and believable most of the time, and it was interesting seeing the world through their eyes. I loved most of the characters in the film, and they all seem like real people (except for Dafoe). This fact contributes to the idea that this is an accurate depiction of American poverty, and cast in the shadow of Walt Disney World further accentuates this. The whole visual and audio composition of the film really drives this idea home, and I really ended up sympathizing with the characters more than most movies I have watched. It's not exactly filled with laughs or jaw-dropping moments, but this is a slow, quieter film that has a lot to say.
