The Grand Budapest Hotel
Wes Anderson
Directed by:
2014

Despite it's quality, this movie did not meet my high expectations. Knowing Wes Anderson's work very well, I expected The Grand Budapest to be his best, based on the high praise it garnered from critics. However, I don't believe this to be the case. The visuals here are of course amazing, as they are in every other Anderson film. The characters are also top notch, as is the writing and acting. However, I think the story is a little incomprehensible at times, and isn't told as well as it could have been. I did enjoy the wide variety of locations and visuals, which are not a major concern in other Anderson works, but the story beats that led the characters to these locations were mediocre at best. I think that with a stronger overall story, this could have been a masterpiece. And while still an extremely enjoyable film, and one I will certainly try and watch again, it is not close to perfection.
