The King

This movie almost flew completely under my radar, which is surprising as it came out very recently. Maybe the many other good films in 2019 made this film slip past, but I honestly don't mind. This is a mediocre film at best, with some of the weirdest story and character writing I have ever seen. I'll get the good stuff out of the way: the action is brutal and gory, which is refreshing, and the visuals that go along with it are also very clear and beautiful. The acting from Robert Pattinson was top notch. He was definitely the highlight of the film in all respects, commanding attention in every scene he was in. Unfortunately, he was in about 3 scenes. The majority of this movie is just historical, dramatical slop. The plot seems to be missing its third act, or perhaps both a second and third act. I say this because the character development that pretends to occur during the film is cut really really short. I'm not saying the main character arc was bad (that of King Henry), I'm saying that the movie did not spend enough time on his character or his arc to actually make it a true arc. It felt like this film was trying to do too many things. You can't be a movie showcasing the horrors of war and the inner turmoils of a solider/kings mind while also being a political drama, historical epic, biographical work, and hero origin story. There's just too many different ideas and themes crammed into this film that it becomes overloaded and ends up saying absolutely nothing. I honestly think this might have been better as a tv series of some sort. However, it wasn't, and as a consequence, it ends up being just another medocire movie. Also, side note, its really hard to take the main character have any presence when every time it shows a full body shot of him I just remember how scrawny Chamalet is.
