I heard a lot, and I mean a lot, of good things about this film when it first came out almost a decade ago. I've had the desire to watch it ever since, and now that I finally have, I'm a little dissapointed. This is undoubtably a great film that deserves love and praise for its rather great dark comedy and dramatic themes. However the main thing that tarnishes this film for me personally is just a lack of clarity and fulfilling potential. With all memorable romantic drama, the most impactful and meaningful moments are when characters make decisions, especially when those decisions put themselves at odds with the people around them or the audience. There are several moments in The Lobster in which these decisions could have been made, but none of them came to fruition. There's only one really impactful decision made by the main character (where he gets help from the maid), but for the rest of the film everyone is just being bossed around. At the climax, there is a lot of dramatic tension that boils over into a particularly dramatic finish, however even the final act that seems to be taken (or not) by the main character is cut short before the film is even over. Okay anyway, besides the complaints I just lodged, I also thought the entire concept of the animals was not developed enough. I did like how they kept everything mysterious, but there were so many psychological and emotional implications of that concept that are just never explored in the film. As I said, a waste of potential. Still, this is a well done film with some interesting themes and explorations of love and people. It can also be pretty funny when it wants to be.
