The Marriage of Maria Braun
Rainer Fassbinder

This is one of the most conflicted reviews I have probably ever written. I am so torn about what to think of this film. Everything individual thing about it is good, the audio is unique and kind of fun, the visuals are pretty solid. I like how the characters are written and I think the story is, at the very least, interesting. I like how the environments are practically crumbling around the characters, I like the ending, and I like the beginning. But, despite all of these things, the film just didn't resonate with me very much. Maria Braun is a very interesting character but not one that's very fun to watch. I was almost rooting against her near the end. Perhaps this is intended and I am reading too much into it, but even so I cannot say I loved watching the film or even talking about it very much. I will definitely revisit this in the future to see if my initial impression is unfounded, but at the very least this is a very unique film that touches on a lot of interesting post-war themes and messages contained in a totally unique story.
