The Night of the Hunter
Charles Laughton

1955

I'm becoming very fond of this film the more I think about it. Night of the Hunter is a movie that's hard to describe in the broad strokes. One the one hand its almost a coming-of-age tale, an adventure with two kids learning how to live in the world and escape from danger. On the other, its a crime noir film about a deranged false preacher and (depending on how you view it) a movie that critiques/supports religion through its themes and messaging. I think this wild combination of motifs and ideas make for one of the more interesting films I have ever watched. There's so much to be said about so many parts of it; like how the film directly blames women for their lust while also refusing to show even a single male role model. Or how about the excellent cinematography, audio, lighting, and acting (from the adult actors at least)? It's usually not difficult for me to choose a frame from the film to use for the site, but with this movie it was quite a challenge just because of how many iconic and memorable shots there were. This is a film that will leave you engrossed throughout the entire runtime and leave you asking for more. There are plenty of aspects of it that didn't age well, as almost no movies this old do, but its still a compelling narrative that deserves to be seen.
