The Raid 2
Gareth Evans

2014

The Raid is one of my all time favorite action movies. And this movie has action that is in some places areguably better than the original. The visuals and camerawork during fight scenes is better, the action is more varied in locale and weapon usage, and the final fight is one of the best ever. However, this movie is objectively worse than the first. The action, while amazing, is spread thinly throughout this very long movie and comes in such short bursts that sometimes it's not even worth watching. In between these bouts of greatness, the movie is filled with uninteresting characters and dull plot points. This movie tries to focus on its drama much more than the first but fails because A) it fails to establish an emotional connection with literally every character the audience is supposed to care about (except maybe the main) and B) its story is filled with so many uninteresting characters and uneccessary complexity that it's a chore to follow at times. The villains are poorly established (even compared to Raid 1) and the main character's motivations are weird at best. Still a good movie for it's action though. That final fight is so fucking good its crazy honestly.
