Thunderbolts*

I think Marvel spent more on the advertising for Thunderbolts than the actual film because wow this movie is overhyped. Don't get me wrong; it's one of the better Marvel films since Endgame, but I've been saying that about several movies for years. The truth is, Marvel just can't seem to get back to the level of quality we saw in the 2010's. Thunderbolts* is a fine movie, with some great characters and writing and some half-decent action as well. But after the credits started rolling my only thought was "that's it?" I think the main issue with the film is the story, which feels like it needs another half act before hitting us with the finale. The film doesn't do a good enough job of establishing a true villain (although there's multiple), doesn't establish any grand stakes, and doesn't really flesh out the team interactions you would expect from, you know, a superhero team-up film. I'm specifically talking about Bucky and Ava, who are mostly included in the story just to fill out the roster. I did like a few things about the film, especially Pugh and her performance as well as the rest of the unmentioned Thunderbolts and their dialouge. I do think this is one of the funnier Marvel movies they've done recently, and the whole thing feels like they're going back to their original style, which I like. However, the Marvel engine may need a few more kinks worked out before I start getting excited for their next film.
