Train to Busan

Quite embarrased with myself that it took me this long to actually watch this film from beginning to end. I knew it was good, if not great, but I guess I was just lazy. Anyway this film is pretty awesome. Has some hack-and-slash horror elements without every getting gory or hard to look at, as well as incredibly well-written characters (for how simple their development is). It's fun to watch them do pretty much everything in the film, from fighting to running to just walking around in the quieter moments. The tension stays at a perfect level throughout, ramping up slowly before exploding into a cacophany of interesting scenes and setpieces. The story itself is good, if not a little simple. The second act and ending are practically perfect. It works because the entire premise almost seems like a parody of the horror/zombie genre, with the heroes powering through thanks to the power of friendship as opposed to betrayal and controversy. Of course that's not to say that betrayal isn't in this film, it wouldn't be a zombie film if the phrase "the real monsters are the people" isn't drilled into your head at least a couple times. Train to Busan is just a flat-out fun film to watch alone or with friends.
