Ugetsu
Kenji Mizoguchi
Directed by:
1953

This is a short-ish (1.5 hour) movie that I thought was way longer. I don't mean this in a bad way, but this rather felt like a dream, a mirage of different images and storylines that took their time converging back into each other and into a deeper meaning. And I do think that Ugetsu does this very well, showcasing these great, heartfelt story snippets within the scope of a wonderfully shot movie. I do feel like I have to rewatch this film to really come to terms with it, its just that kind of movie. The themes of war, poverty, and greed are presented nicely, and I enjoyed the ending. While a slow film, it has a lot to say, and there's very few scenes which are downright boring. I will enjoy watching it again soon.
