Vagabond

While still a novice in the realm of Varda, I am really beginning to enjoy her style and works. Vagabond is an incredibly interesting film in many different ways, whether you're examining the visual style and cinematogrophy or the storytelling and structure. The film starts off very sharply, grabbing your attention before leading you on a long, quiet path of a young woman's life. The film doesn't shy away from the joys or horrors of life on the road, showcasing Mona interacting with a wide variety of strangers during her travels. The thing I loved the most were the little moments after Mona had gone away and we heard what every person thought about her. These scenes not only were an extremely interesting addition to the film, but also a key thematic element that were a cornerstone to the style and feel. Varda seems extremely good at making the camera a part of the film in ways I've never seen before, and Vagabond is another good example of this. While the story was certainly slow and uneventful at times, this also serves the purposes of the film and adds rather than detracts from the experience. This is a short and sweet movie that I throughly enjoyed watching, and it makes me ever so thankful there are some Varda films that I have not yet watched.
