Warfare

I have a lot of mixed feelings on this film. For one, it's a really interesting and well-made story, with great visuals, audio, and directing creating a decently entertaining experience. However, this is not like most war films. There is no traditional "plot", since the film is based entirely around the stories of the (American) men who fought that day. While this makes for a extremely interesting movie, it also makes it feel not much like a movie. I was going to say that it's more of a documentary, but this also isn't true. Rather, it's a well-choreographed reenactment. This isn't a negative thing per se, however the negative aspects of the film come with what it lacks. Even propaganda films have a message, even if it's just "war bad" or "America good", but Warfare barely has anything like that. Besides the humanization of the Marines and consequent dehumanization of the Iraqis, there is no takeaway, no themes, no point. No ideas are explored at all. And while realistic, if your art doesn't have meaning, then it is not art. Warfare is simple glorification at worst, a half-baked film at best.
